New Repeat Policy (Undergraduate Only)
The repeated course policy at OSU is getting a student-friendly upgrade as part of a new statewide policy update. Going into effect June-July 2025, the updated repeat policy expands how academic forgiveness is applied to active students with repeated courses.
The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education (OSRHE) revised the statewide repeat policy, allowing undergraduate students to repeat courses up to four times to earn a better grade, with only the highest grade considered in GPA calculations for those attempts. Any attempts beyond the fourth will impact GPA calculations, and all attempts will be documented on transcripts with notations indicating how it counts in GPA and earned hours calculations.
The policy will be evaluated and implemented for all active undergraduate students with repeated courses during June-July 2025, involving a review of transcripts and updates when needed to align with the new policy. Please use the links below for more information:

Repeat Policy Overview
- Students may repeat any course up to 4 attempts, including the initial attempt, to achieve a higher grade.
- Only the highest grade earned in the first 4 attempts will be used in GPA calculation.
- Any attempt after the first 4 will be included in GPA calculation.
- All attempts will be recorded on the transcript with grades listed for each semester, along with a notation indicating whether the course is included or excluded from the GPA.
- There is no limit on the number of courses that can be repeated, and any initial grade is eligible.
Federal Financial Aid Considerations
Your federal financial aid could be affected by repeating courses. Refer to the “Repeat Coursework” section on the Eligible Coursework page of the Office Scholarships and Financial Aid website for details.
Your Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) status could be affected by repeating courses. Refer to the SAP Policy page of the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid website to learn more.
Contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid with any questions about how repeating courses will affect your financial aid.

Implementation Details
Who will be included?
- All undergraduate students enrolled or active for Spring 2025, Summer 2025, or Fall 2025 with at least one repeated course and no earned OSU degree.
- Former students who don’t meet the criteria above will only have their repeated courses re-evaluated after being readmitted as an undergraduate student and having new credit awarded to the undergraduate level of their OSU transcript.
- All new prospective undergraduate students will have their repeated courses evaluated according to the new policy.
What will happen during the summer repeat policy implementation?
- All repeated courses on the undergraduate level of the OSU transcript will be re-evaluated according to the new repeat policy. Updates may be made to the repeat indicators to reflect whether the course is included in or excluded from GPA calculations.
When will the repeat policy implementation occur?
- Summer 2025 (June-July).
How will the updates happen?
- First, an automated process will re-evaluate all repeated courses on the transcript and make updates to repeat indicators as needed.
- Next, a manual review will take place for students with the following repeat scenarios:
- Repeated courses with more than four attempts.
- Courses with manually marked repeat indicators.
Additional implementation considerations
- Implementation will take several weeks, and undergraduate transcripts will be in transition during this time.
- Transcript requests will still be available throughout this process.
- GPAs are likely to increase for students with more than two attempts of repeated courses.

How will I know if I’m included in the summer 2025 repeat policy implementation?
Students included in the repeat policy implementation will receive an email at their OSU email address from the Office of the Registrar about the new undergraduate repeat policy update.
How will I know when my transcript has been completely updated?
Students will receive another message from the Office of the Registrar after the repeated courses on their transcript have been evaluated. Students can also contact their academic advisor for updates. They will be able to see your transcript’s status within Slate via student attributes
How does this affect me if I’ve never repeated a class?
Students who have never repeated a class will have no changes to their transcript. This process will only affect classes that have been repeated.
How do repeated courses look on the transcript?
Repeated courses can have one of three different repeat indicators on the transcript, shown in the R (Repeat) column:
Repeat Indicator |
Include in GPA? |
Include in Earned Hours? |
Notes |
I (Include) |
Yes |
Yes |
Attempt with highest grade (in first four attempts) |
E (Exclude) |

A (Include in GPA) |

No |
Fifth attempt and above |
The repeat indicators can be seen across from each repeated course on the far right (look for the column labeled “R”):
What is the new repeat policy?
An excerpt of the statewide repeat policy can be found here and is included below.
A student shall have the prerogative to repeat any courses up to four attempts, including the initial attempt, to achieve a higher grade. Only the highest grade earned of the four attempts will be used in the calculation of the GPA. Any attempt after the first four attempts will be used in the calculation of the GPA. All attempts shall be recorded on the transcript with the earned grade for each course listed in the semester earned.
Are there limits to the number of courses on my transcript that are eligible for repeat policy forgiveness?
No, there is no limit to the number of coursess on the undergraduate level of the transcript that are eligible for repeat policy forgiveness.
Do I have to earn a D or F on the first attempt of a course to be eligible for repeat policy forgiveness?
No, any grade (except A) can be repeated, excluded from the GPA and replaced by a higher grade, as long as it is within the first four attempts.
What do the repeat indicator codes on the transcript (E, I and A) mean?
A course designated “E” is a repeat excluded from earned hours and GPA.
A course designated “I” is a repeat included in earned hours and GPA.
A course designated “A” is a repeat included in GPA but excluded from earned hours.
How will this impact my financial aid?
Your federal financial aid could be affected by repeating courses. Refer to the Federal Financial Aid Considerations section above.
How will passing grades earned for credit by exam (CBE-P) be handled by the new repeat policy?
While passing grades don't affect the GPA like a “C”, the “CBE-P” passing grade is considered the same rank. It is higher than a “D” but lower than a “B”. The repeat policy will mark the earliest attempt of a course with the highest grade (within the first four attempts) as the instance to include in GPA. For example:
Term |
Course |
Grade |

Include in GPA? |
Summer 2023 |
HIST 1103 |

Spring 2024 |

If I repeat a course and earn the same highest grade more than once, which instance of the highest grade will be included in GPA?
The earliest attempt of a course with the highest grade (within the first four attempts) will be the one included in the GPA. For example:
