Reverse Transfer

What is Reverse Transfer?

Reverse transfer is a process that allows students who have transferred to OSU from a two-year institution to apply their OSU credits toward an associate’s degree from the previous school (if they transferred to OSU before earning an associate’s degree). The combined credit from OSU and the two-year school can enable students to be awarded an associate’s degree from their previous institution while working toward an OSU bachelor’s degree.

With student consent, the OSU Office of the Registrar will send qualifying students’ OSU transcripts back to the participating two-year school after the end of each semester. The two-year school will determine if the additional credits from OSU complete requirements for an associate’s degree, and will award the applicable associate’s degree with student consent.

Benefits to students

  1. Associates degrees are recognized and meaningful credentials that have the potential to increase employment options and salary levels.
  2. Students who earn an associate’s degree as a result of reverse transfer are more likely to complete their OSU bachelor’s degree.
  3. Associate of Science and Associate of Arts degrees from Oklahoma institutions satisfy general education requirements for an OSU bachelor’s degree, and may reduce the number of credit hours for an OSU bachelor’s degree (consult with your academic advisor).

Requirements for Reverse Transfer

  1. Must be an active OSU junior or senior with at least 15 credit hours earned from a single Oklahoma associate-degree granting institution.
  2. No evidence of having earned an associate’s degree from a transfer institution.
  3. Must provide consent for your OSU transcript to be sent to your previous institution after the end of each term (contact us at registrar@okstate.edu to provide your consent for reverse transfer).
  4. Must provide consent to the previous two-year school to award an associate’s degree (contact the Registrar’s office at the previous institution).

Provide your Consent

Students who believe they may qualify for reverse transfer can contact the OSU Office of the Registrar at registrar@okstate.edu and provide their consent for OSU to send their official transcript back to the participating two-year school after the end of each semester.

Reverse Transfer FAQs

Q: What do I need to do to send my OSU coursework to my previous school to earn an associate’s degree?

A: Send an email from your @okstate.edu email address to registrar@okstate.edu indicating your consent for OSU to send your OSU transcript to your previous Oklahoma school. Once the OSU Registrar’s Office has your consent, we will take care of sending your OSU transcripts to that institution for you after each semester. Your previous school will then determine if your OSU coursework can be added as transfer work to their official transcript and if it qualifies you to earn an associate’s degree from their institution. If so, they are likely to contact you to ensure you consent to earn the associate’s degree before they award it. The would then send OSU a transcript as proof of the earned degree, and we would record it in your OSU student records.

Q: Who can I contact to find the status of my OSU credits transferring back to my previous school?

A: For more information about your eligibility to use OSU credits to earn an associate’s degree at your previous Oklahoma college, please contact your previous institution’s reverse transfer contact.

Q: Is there an additional cost to participate in reverse transfer?

A: There is no cost to participate in OSU’s reverse transfer program. Upon receiving your consent to participate in reverse transfer, the OSU Registrar’s office will automatically send your OSU transcript to your previous Oklahoma school(s) each spring and fall semester for the purposes of reverse transfer.

Q: How will I know if my OSU credits qualify me to receive an associate’s degree from my previous institution?

A: Your previous school will evaluate your OSU transcript and determine if your additional OSU coursework can transfer and qualify you for an associate’s degree at their institution. If so, they are likely to contact you to obtain your consent to graduate from their institution. After awarding an associate’s degree, your previous school would then send OSU an official transcript showing the earned associate’s degree, and we would record that credential in the OSU student system.

Q: Will participating in reverse transfer delay my graduation from OSU or affect anything else about my progress toward an OSU degree?

A: Participating in OSU’s Reverse Transfer program will have no impact on your current OSU enrollment or your OSU GPA and can only help speed your progress toward earning an OSU degree. An earned Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree from an Oklahoma institution generally completes the lower-division general education requirements for an OSU bachelor’s degree.

Q: How will I know if OSU has proof of my associate’s degree?

A: Students can verify associate’s degrees recorded in the OSU student system by accessing your Student Profile in Student Self-Service and clicking on Prior Education and Testing (one of the first links under your photo). The display of your Student Profile should change to reflect prior education as indicated on official transcripts received at OSU, including school names and degrees earned. You can return to the default display by clicking on Curriculum and Courses.

Q: I have already earned an associate’s degree from my previous school. Why am I being contacted about this?

A: If you have already earned an associate’s degree from your previous Oklahoma 2-year institution, please contact registrar@oktate.edu with the details so we can work with them to obtain an official transcript and record the credential in the OSU student system.
